Birds and pheasants and Humpty, Oh My!

Hello Everyone! Two blog posts in one night. I figured I would do it while I have the chance. You all have given me such nice feedback about this quilt. I really appreciate it. I love using found fabrics in quilts, and the thrift stores in Wisconsin were a gold mine last year. So, my question is, how do I finish this quilt? Do you think I should put a boarder around it, or just leave it as is and bind it? And quilting, any thoughts??? Hope everyone is well.

  1. David, I just love this quilt. I would have walked right by this fabric. I think you need some kind of a border to hold it all in and keep your eye on the wonderful center. Maybe a thin dark border and then a pieced checkerboard outer border, not too wide. Such a great quilt and so inspired!

Humpty might benefit from an chicken inspired fabric border . . . you know, what came first?

  2. i agree that borders will stop humpty from walking off the quilt and hold it all together visually. i'm a fan of a think inner border (dark or solid) and a nice thick outer border (print) my usual combo is 2" and 8".

  3. I'd vote for no border! I like how it looks like a pretty simple quilt, just a bunch of squares, until you look closer. As for quilting, I'd also stay simple, either diagonally through the centers of the squares, or straight lines just inside and outside of each square. Good luck deciding!

  4. No border - looks great the way it is. As for quilting - nothing too fancy and use thread that will blend into the fabric that you have. Not sure what size your squares are - but you could do diagonal lines criss-crossing the squares - or a simple flowing design would be great.

  5. Ooh! You have a hard choice! But I think if you play with it a bit you will find a solution that works best to make it "you"

follow your instinct! Can't wait to see what you decide. It's a fabulous quilt!

  6. I would vote for a medium-wide border in a blue color (to match the colors in the quilt). I recently quilted a similar "block" style quilt by stitching 1/4 inch away from each seam line. It added a little texture but didn't take away from the focus on the prints. Can't wait to see the finished product!

  7. I'd vote for no border, but don't feel real strongly.... maybe for the quilting you might want to do a primitive hand=quilting job ... larger stitches and/or embroidery thread?

  8. How about a white border, about 1 1/4" wide, hand-quilted with black embroidery thread in big stitches 1/4" in from the top ?

  9. I love this quilt! I've been collecting those fabric patterns at thrift stores for years here, in Seattle. I just thought I'd use them for backs. Cutting them up is brilliant! I say no border. It's perfect as-is.
