Quilt Border Thoughts?

Hi all,

I am almost done with the medallion quilt that I brought in for last month's show-and-tell, and I am so happy with the way it is turning out!  I have a bit of a dilemma, though, and I was wondering if you had any thoughts.

Below is a photo of my quilt in its current state (it measures about 70 inches by 70 inches).  Do I stop adding borders and keep it as is, or should I add one more border?  I was planning on adding a dark blue pieced border as the final one, but I like how the yellow border makes the quilt look so "sparkly."  I am tempted to keep it as is and just add a red binding for a touch of color at the edge.  I am worried that a dark blue border may make it too somber, but it might tie everything together.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or advice!  Thanks!

  1. Great Quilt - leave it as it is - I wouldn't add another border - but what you could do is bind it with the dark blue you were going to use in the final border - it might add the "frame" that you were looking for originally.

  2. I agree to leave it as it is. Nicole it is just beautiful! Can't believe how much you have gotten done in such a short time. I would do the red binding you had picked out already or a blue that is more of the same value as the blue in the quilt.

  3. Leave it as is and put up red on one side and blue on the other to see what binding to use. The red is so strong already so I'm thinking the blue might be better.

  5. This is unbelievable Nicole!! I knew you could make the deadline. I agree that it's good as-is, and that the binding choice is going to be what ties it all together. Test out red or blue, and good luck deciding!

  6. Your quilt is beautiful, Nicole. I agree with the others....I'd leave it as is and audition red or blue for the binding. I probably lean towards red.

  7. Gorgeous, Nicole, gorgeous!
If it were mine I would let the yellow be the final border ... & try even a pale binding like yellow/orange before deciding between red/blue. Good luck!

  8. I think it looks finished the way it is. The yellow makes a great frame. A dark binding might be nice.

  10. I'd love to see a red binding....maybe pieced at 45 degree angles with lots of different reds...and a tiny shot of blue every now and then. Very exciting quilt, Nicole!!!
