November saw us return to The Center at 208 West 13th Street, where we were delighted to discover that our new meeting room has a balcony that works perfectly for displaying large quilts.
Maren started the meeting by welcoming all of our new members and reminding everyone about our current charity projects...
Maureen Wirth is collecting baby quilts for a local charity called Room To Grow which provides coaching and baby goods to low income families with babies under the age of three. The quilts are due to be delivered later this month, so please contact Maureen if you have any donations to give.
Theresa is collecting quilts for an orphanage in Honduras called Our Little Roses. The orphanage cares for around fifty girls from infancy up to the age of eighteen, so they can use quilts of any size. The deadline for donating quilts is June 2023.
Our Block Lotto for this month was a scrappy nine patch design featuring colorful patterns and a background of dark greys and black. We ended up with a bumper crop of blocks this time around! Theresa was the lucky winner who got to take them all home.
Bruce showed us two examples of the Block Lotto design for next month. It's a modern twist on a log cabin block featuring a red pentagon surrounded by either light or dark strips. Bruce will email the instructions to all guild members ahead of our next meeting.
Deborah and Chris announced that they will be offering a free workshop on how to make Kawandi quilts after our next guild meeting on December 3rd. They will send an email to all guild members with a list of materials so that folks who want to participate in the workshop can prepare in advance.
Deborah and Chris showed some examples of Kawandi quilts that they learned how to make in a course taught by Sujata Shah.
Nanette kicked off Show and Tell with a hand quilted lap-sized quilt that was based on a quilt made by Gee's Bend quilter
Sally Bennett Jones.
Brian showed a pair of Christmas quilts that he made for two of his granddaughters. (He has twelve grandkids so the quilting never ends!) The two girls share a bedroom, so Brian made them matching quilts featuring red and green prints. The quilts were longarmed by
Three Birds and Stitches in NY.
Debbie showed a quit top that was inspired by a quilt she saw on The Quilt Show. She customized the pattern by making an orange version. She also made a mini Kawandi quilt out of the leftover fabric.
Bernadette showed a quilt top that features English paper pieced 'Rose Star' blocks. She added large panels of patterned fabric because the pattern was just too good to cut up!
Jean showed a kaleidoscope quilt top that she worked on at our last guild retreat. She made it using the 'stack and whack' method.
Jean also showed this mini quilt that she made for her sister using Tula Pink's 'Sugar Skulls' pattern.
Alyson showed a charming table runner that she made as a Christmas gift.
Sam showed a baby quilt that she's working on. She used fabric decorated with bicycles in honor of the baby's parents, who met each other during a charity cycling event raising money to fight AIDS.
Jody showed a comfort quilt made out of the Block Lotto blocks that she won at last month's guild meeting. (I think we can all agree that's a very impressive turnaround time.)
Jody also showed another comfort quilt with a pieced back. Both quilts will be donated to charity through the Northern Star Quilters' Guild.
Chris has found the perfect t-shirt for quilters...
Eva showed a scrap quilt that she's donating to Our Little Roses.
Susan Cummings-Walder showed an 'Interlink' quilt with a customized border that she made as a gift for her son. The quilt is slightly larger than queen size and she quilted it herself!
Sue Erdreich showed two quilts that she's donating to Room To Grow. She free motion quilted the first one with a pattern of vines and butterflies...
... And she made the second one out of blocks sourced from the sharing table at our last guild retreat.
Cathy showed a baby quilt in progress. She used the 'Crosswalk' pattern from Quilts by Elena and she made the top out of a jelly roll of colorful Marcia Derse fabrics.
That's it for this month. See you at the next meeting!
