June 2023 Meeting Recap

Our June guild meeting was a chance to meet new friends and celebrate Pride Month before the start of the summer break.

This month we waived our admission fee so that guild members could bring their friends for free. We had a fantastic group of guests and it was a pleasure to welcome so many new folks to our guild for the first time. 

Maren started the meeting by saying thank you to two of our board members, Maureen and Eva, who are finishing their terms this month. As a thank you gift, Maren presented each of them with a bundle of blocks made by our guild members. At some point over the summer break we will hold a vote to appoint our new board members - an email will go out to all guild members some time soon.

This month's block lotto was a bundle of sampler quilt blocks featuring half square triangles and polka dot fabric. Janet was the lucky winner who got to take home the blocks.

Chris kicked off show and tell with this round robin quilt top. Chris added an outer border to the quilt top and Marie volunteered to quilt it. 

Andrea brought in another round robin project: someone left this American barn panel on the scrap table and we've been taking turns to add embellishments to it. Andrea showed us her most recent addition: "there was a storm, and now there's a hole in the roof."

Jody brought in this sampler quilt that was made as a group project. The quilt features an eclectic collection of orphan blocks that were contributed by our guild members. Eva assembled the quilt top, Chris generously contributed the backing, and Jody very kindly did the quilting. The finished quilt is quirky, fun and unique - just like our guild! 

Brian worked on this quilt top at our last guild retreat. It's going to be a gift for his granddaughter...

Brian is on a mission to make Christmas quilts for his grandkids - all twelve of them! He brought in his latest quilt top...

Marie made this quilt top at the guild retreat using Anna Maria Horner fabrics...

Marie also brought in this scrappy crumb quilt. Instead of squaring up the quilt, she decided to keep the outline of the star shapes at the edges. 

Sarah is making this sampler quilt as a gift for a colleague who's retiring. Her colleague loves films, so Sarah used film themed fabric combined with New York Beauty blocks. She also drew inspiration from this month's block lotto to make some star blocks.

Arlene brought in two quilts to donate to Our Little Roses. The first quilt is made from plaid fabric...

... and she worked on the second one at the guild retreat. The backing is folded over to the front in order to make the binding.

Sue brought in this king sized quilt made out of striped Kaffe Fassett fabric. She started this quilt all the way back in 2018. The blocks are made out of quarter square triangles that Sue carefully cut and pieced to perfectly match the stripes on all four corners. The quilt was longarmed at Sew Jersey. 

Sam brought in one of the first quilts she ever made, which features appliqued flowers and butterflies. It's been hanging on the wall above her daughter's bed for the last fifteen years.

Amy made this Christmas quilt with an extra warm flannel backing...

Diane won the Block Lotto back in March and she received a colorful bundle of quilt blocks made from cute and funny novelty fabrics. She had great fun turning the blocks into this baby quilt, which she's going to donate as a charity quilt.

 Audrey is in the process of hand quilting this baby quilt as a gift for her friend Emily...

Audrey's friend Emily visited our guild and showed us this charming baby playmat that she made herself.

Another of our guests, Marilyn, very kindly donated this baby quilt to Our Little Roses.

Nanette made this quilt during a Maria Shell workshop. It was her first time making a quilt exclusively out of solids and she found the experience very creatively freeing. She has named this quilt 'The Circus'.

Brent showed us one of the first traditional style quilts that he ever made. He hand dyed the fabric and then free motion quilted it himself. This quilt is going to be a gift for his mom.

Brent also showed us this quilt featuring an underwater scene. It's made out of hand dyed fabric, which Brent hand sewed using needle turn applique - and then he hand quilted it too. The quilt took a total of 550 hours to make. Can you believe this is only the fourth quilt that Brent has ever made? 

Debbie is donating these two quilts to Our Little Roses. She made the first one out of a black and red charm pack...

... and she hand quilted the second one during the pandemic. 

Eva is donating this scrappy string quilt to Our Little Roses. 

After show and tell, we held a prize draw and Andrea was the lucky winner of this 'Garden' quilt - congratulations, Andrea!

And finally, Deborah and Bruce kicked off our summer quilting challenge and handed out the fabric that we're going to use. This year we're using the Mod Botany collection from Maywood Studio. We're looking forward to seeing all the beautiful quilts that our guild members create over the summer!
