February 2019 Block Lotto

February 2019 Block Lotto

Heart Block

Now that we are well into another cold, sometimes dreary, New York City winter, I wanted to work on a bright and cheerful block.  With Valentine's Day approaching, a simple heart block was the answer.  So dig out those reds and pinks and some low volume fabric for the background and let's get sewing!

For each eight-inch heart block, you will need:

-  Two red or pink rectangles, 4 1/2" X 8 1/2"
-  Two low volume squares, 4 1/2"
-  Four low volume squares, 2 1/2"

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on all six low volume squares.

Place one small square on the top right of each red rectangle with the lines as shown below.  Stitch just to the outside of the drawn line, toward the seam allowance, not right on top of the drawn line.

Trim excess, leaving 1/4" seam allowance.  (I save these leftover triangles for other projects.)  Flip the light fabric to the right side and press seams as desired (some of us press our seams open, others to one side - either is fine, no quilt police here!).

Now place the remaining two small squares on the top left of the red rectangles with drawn lines as shown.

Stitch just to the outside of the drawn line. Trim excess, leaving 1/4" seam allowance. Flip light fabric to the right side and press seams as desired.

Now place the two large squares on the bottom of the red rectangles with the drawn lines as shown.

Stitch just to the outside of the drawn line. Trim excess, leaving 1/4" seam allowance. Flip light fabric to the right side and press seams as desired.

Now place the two pieces right sides together, pin and stitch along the center vertical line.

Press seam open and you have a heart block!

Don't forget those leftover triangles!  They can be used in another project.  Or, if you would like to donate them along with your blocks, feel free to bring them to the February meeting.  The lucky winner might be able to use them in a border.

Stay warm everyone and have fun making these heart blocks.  See you at the February meeting.

Best,
Maureen

How To Play Block Lotto
Each month Block Lotto block instructions are posted here on the blog.
Make as many blocks as you like and bring them along to the next meeting.
For each block you bring along and donate to the lotto draw, you will be given a lotto ticket:

1 block = 1 lotto ticket
2 blocks = 2 tickets
3 blocks = 3 tickets, and so on.

If you're the lucky winner of the lotto draw then ALL the Block Lotto blocks donated at that meeting are yours to keep.

At the April 2017 meeting, members agreed that Block Lotto blocks belong to the winner who can do with them as they wish.  It is asked, however, that the quilt is entered into the group category of any competition entered.

Good Luck!
