The Process of Play

Hi Everyone. Great to see you all last week. Always come away feeling so inspired and a little depressed. Not enough hours in the day to get everything done. And I realize I spend too much time during with week only using my left brain. Nice to let the right side take over for awhile.

Sooo... process. I started this about two weeks ago. I was with a friend in Atlanta and went to a smallish quilt store that was very...um...country, but they did have a fantastic collection of....solids! Some of you may have figured out that I have a real solids fetish. (Not nearly as dirty as it sounds!) And at the store I saw this kind of nasty design that involved an arrow. And I drew one that I thought was kind of funny and chunky. And then went to town making about 12 billion of them. I kind of love it. And I'm guessing the colors aren't going to come out as vibrant in the pictures.

So, to answer the two questions, what I love most about it so far is the simplicity and the repetition of the fairly iconic image of an arrow.

My biggest challenge is how to lay out the blocks. I've been toying with it a couple of different ways. You may have to look close to even notice the difference in the two pics. One has all the arrows going the same one, the other has them going different ways every other row on the diagonal. Any other fun options pop into your head? Pass 'em along.

  2. I think this is your right brain fighting with your left brain! top is right brain bottom is left brain.. which way do you like? It' such a personal choice.. I never tell anyone how to make their quilts.. so i will leave that decision to you, but, play more.. do the "what if" thing... what if you turn four so the point direct into themselves... what if...you turn the 4 going away from each other... etc etc... LOVE TO PLAY!

  4. I was going to say the same thing about the four points coming together. Play around with it. I love the colors. You certainly do have a "thing" for solids! Love it!

  5. Love the arrows! Your layouts are both great. As you're trying options--what about most going the same way then a few turned?

  6. Love them both - top has this sort of energy coming from it and with the bottom you really see the arrows and notice the colors. I have a favorite, but I am keeping it to myself. Play, have fun. I am sure the end result will be fabulous.

  7. I love the one red arrow! I'm voting for layout #1, but if I could play around some more, I'd try layout #2 with just the red arrow pointing in another direction..

  8. The arrows are so great. Nice and graphic. I have a thing for solids too, and I love to see what you are doing with yours!

  9. Wow, the black triangles make a dynamic secondary design in the first quilt! That is what grabbed my attention before I noticed the arrows. Your colors are wonderful, but I LOVE black!
