This was definitely a challenge. Trying to arrange my fabrics from light-to-dark seemed tough, given that to me, they all seem like darks. I took a photo of them in black and white, and yep, all the same tone. But I did my best. And I loved working with them! This fabric was almost like suede, unlike anything I've sewed before, a really pleasant fabric to pet work with.

Solids Challenge - Funfetti Block!
I just completed the solids challenge block from the fabric that we received in the last meeting! It was great working with the new Michael Miller line, and I love the feel of the fabrics.
You can read more about the block HERE.
PS: The Modern Blocks quilt book is now shipping from Amazon! I am hosting a giveaway for a free eBook copy of the book. You can enter HERE until November 1st. Good luck!

Michael Miller Fabrics & The December Block Challenge
We were very lucky to have a visit from the delightful Christine Osmers and Kathy Miller of Michael Miller Fabrics, who showed us some new fabric and discussed how they come up with color stories to determine new lines.

The best part? They BROUGHT FABRIC! And the wolves descended! Just kidding, everyone was very polite (we pulled numbers to pick two pieces each, which kept mayhem to a minimum). Congrats to Margaret who ended up winning all the remaining fabrics--can't wait to see what you make out of it!
We also got a preview of their new line of solids, which works into the December Block Challenge. If you were at the meeting, you got your fabric packet and instructions, and just a reminder that this is a special challenge. You can only use the fabrics provided, and here's what to do:

They also asked us about what we were looking for and would like to see more of in fabric, and it was interesting to hear everyone's opinions. Solids with a little somethin-somethin (to provide a little depth) were high on the list, as well as prints that aren't so girly--fewer flowers, more plaids and paisleys and geometric designs. Also, a lot more grey. As a "modern quilter," what else are you looking for in fabric that you're not finding?

Make a 12.5" (or whatever size you can with the fabric in the pack) abstract block using only the fabrics included--no adding from your stash (no embellishments either). Consider angles, symmetry, balance, etc.
Bring the finished block to the December 3rd meeting! The yellow fabric should be used as the focal "pop."

Mary's June Challenge Blocks
I know you'll see these in about 16 hours, but here's a quick preview of my group quilt blocks for June! They were both exactly the same, like the "traditional" Attic Windows block on the left, and then I chopped one to pieces to make the block on the right.
Can't wait to see, in person, the ones we've already seen on the blog, as well as the ones we haven't seen yet! See you tomorrow!

June Challenge Block
The next quilt meeting is coming up in only a few weeks, and I hope folks are working on their June challenge blocks! You can click on the photo on the right-hand side of the blog for the info and instructions about the June challenge.
For my blocks, I decided to use 1930s prints, for a vintage effect. I also wanted to keep the block a geometric shape but see if I could rearrange the triangles and diamond patterns into something completely different. Here is the beginning photo:
And here is the ending photo after a few slice-and-dice sessions!

Enjoy, and I can't wait to see everyone's blocks!
PS: You can read more about my step-by-step process on my blog. Thanks!

February Challenge Blocks

For our last challenge, the block I made inspired me to get going on a whole monochrome sampler quilt. So for this new challenge, I was excited to try some curved piecing for the first time--but now that I've tried it, I think I'm done for good! From trying to trace a simple curve, to getting that edge smooth, well, I guess it's just not for me. Which is okay, since I don't need to add another project to my list!

december block challenge
This isn't the block I was planning to make at all, but I bought a new pattern and needed to do up a test block.. the cheddars were in arms' reach and look what happened.. (can you spot my mistake? this is why we do test blocks..)
I might still make another, there are a lot of 12" blocks I've been meaning to try.
looking forward to next month~

GROUP QUILT #1
Here's our first group quilt, quilted, bound and hung to enjoy!
A HUGE thank you to Margaret for Quilting it and Binding it!
She offered to Quilt it after I had the strips sewn together....
It looks good hanging among the Vermont landscape!
Love the stripes across the back... I gave Margaret a bunch of fabric and let her have it...
I love the diamonds through there...
Perfectly bound!
I have enjoyed seeing all your Saffron colored blocks for the Group Quilt #2
How much fun will that be to put together...?? ;-)
See ya all in December!
I'm off to Houston this week....

Betta Chedda 2
It still needed a little border because it was short about 1/2", don't you hate that?
I think if came out pretty well. Can't wait to see all the blocks together.
Happy Sewing everyone!

Yelllllow

I passed my bookshelf the other day and I noticed it was pretty much yelling at me:
"Don't you think it's a good time to make that challenge block?!"
Look at all the orangey yellows!
So I went through my stash, and though I had a bunch of prints that I could have used,
the solids were yelling as much as the books.
A nice, simple shoofly block.
Makes me want to do a whole monotone sampler quilt!

Ode to Lemon Jello

Time to blog! Have been traveling a lot, so it was good to get back to the sewing machine and do something that used the right side of my brain. I know others mentioned it in their blog posts, but I really didn't have a lot of options in this cheddar color. Being from Wisconsin, obviously it was hard to get cheese off my mind, but I foung this fabric and decided this would be my ode to lemon jello. I realized that I will be at an early family holiday function in Chicago the first weekend in December. I'll have to send my block to someone. Let me know who wants it!?

Betta Chedda
So this is as far as I have gotten on the challenge block. This photo shows a more "cheddary" color than the actual fabrics. These sqaures are 1 1/2 " so I'll need 144 total. I'm not sure where this is going, but I am having fun so far. Oh and this it the first time I have ever posted on a blog. I hope I did it right!
