Ellen's September Bee Block

Ellen asked for some half square triangles and a color story, along with using her deep indigo fabric. I love red, but have recently been migrating to orange, so that's what showed up when I started looking for fabrics. The tiny green fabric is the "pop."The other part of the story is that I love "share" tables, so you may see some of your fabrics here, and since I never know how to stop 'shopping', there are LOTS of choices here!

Blocks for Maria - Lucky 13

No matter how many times I try to work in other colors, the orange/red theme seems to come forward anyway! The "favorite block" is hand dyed and thread painted - I figured trying to make a traditional block in a tiny size with my skills at sewing straight lines and matching corners would not come out too well . . . So here they are. Thanks for the challenge, Maria.

October Lucky Bee block for Tina

Interestingly enough, Tina asked for scrappy trip around the world blocks for the Lucky Bee this month.  She provided six of the twelve strips needed for two blocks and identified which fabric she wanted us to use for the diagonal.

Not surprisingly, I used a couple of my own green fabrics (go figure), as well as one of my favorite yellows.  I can't wait to see all of the blocks together.

Lucky 13 Bee

A Sunshine Block

for Naomi

Using Naomi's hand-dyed fabric & other cottons, silk & upholstery fabric, I tried a technique new to me:
multiple layers of raw-edged reverse appliqué

Lucky Bee Blocks for Andrea

Two fall blocks for Andrea M. -  a bare fall tree in the woods and some falling leaves.  Andrea gave me the background fabric used in the tree block and I was lucky to find fabric from the same line, different pattern, to use for the background for the leaf block.  This was a fun challenge, Andrea!

Autumn leaves etc. for Andrea Murray

Autumn has my favorite colors, and my favorite objects - leaves - so I had a party with this month's block. The flower is sort of cheating - but it does bloom at the end of the summer, and it was smiling in the share table  . . .

Lucky 13 Bee

It was a good day for a bit of sewing!

One 12.5" for Jody using her b/w wedge and green/black batik
plus a warm solid and then some 15 Min made fabric fun to finish.

And three paper-pieced blocks for Judy ...

... which were also fun to make using
solids with red or black corners.

These will be mailed Thursday.

For Naomi ~

A bit of the ocean - calm on the surface, an undertow brewing beneath.  I loved the shading
on the hand dyed fabrics. Naomi, I'll bring it to you tomorrow.

June Lucky Bee Blocks

These two wonky blocks are for Daniela.  They were quick and fun to make.
Love your feature fabric!

Daniela, I hope you like them - they are on their way to you.
I can't wait to see them all together.

Lucky 13 bee openings

Attention guild members! The Lucky 13 Bee has several openings for a new year starting in November. This bee started last year and we've had a lot of fun seeing all the blocks we came up with. If you are interested in joining the bee, please email me at dcatrocho@gmail.com (must be a guild member). Any skill level is welcome- this is a fun way of experimenting and trying new things.

Lucky 13 Bee blocks catch up

Finally getting caught up on all my bee blocks. Heading off to you in the mail, here they are!

For Naomi (August), the leaf fabric you sent us was so wonderful that it reminded me of my trips to Vermont during this time of year. I'm calling this one the "disappearing maple leaf" because it just blends in nicely with the background fabric, just like a whole forest of maple trees in Vermont.

(this photo was taken pre-trimming)

For Greer (Sept.): this block was much harder than it initially looked, but I finally got it to the right size. I really love these colors together and I can't wait to see the finished quilt.

For Tina (Oct.): these were so easy to make, I could have kept going! Love love love the color choices- so vibrant and not something I would be brave enough to choose for myself.
(the photo does not do these colors justice)

Confetti for Greer

My first incarnation of the confetti block was pieced very improvisationally with many scraps, and only after I was done did I realize that this wasn't what Greer was looking for. Ooops. Luckily I had enough backing fabric to make a second block with fewer seams. I'm not trying to over achieve by making two blocks, just fixing what I did wrong in the first! I'll put them in the mail soon.

And a third leaf falls ...

for Naomi - Lucky Bee 13

August Block

Loved trying a few new techniques to make this block!

And the second leaf to fall...

I made a second leaf for Naomi with much neater appliqué (someone finally remembered her lightweight fusible interfacing was designed for exactly this sort of thing). The background fabric this time is Kona cinnamon, 10.5" square.

Sewing for Fall in an August thunderstorm

My first attempt at a Fall leaf for Naomi. The applique is a little... rustic. I think since I have so much of the original fabric left I might attempt another leaf iteration! The base block is 10" square.

Luck 13 Bee Blocks

Catching up on my long due blocks ~

For Kati, Friendship Stars - this was inspired by Lisa's dancing Friendship Stars on 15 Minutes.
Friendship Star

For Jody - this Carnival Star is 10x brighter in person.  I took a Star class many years ago with Margit Echols (sp?) and this was one of my favorites.

Carnival Star

Both were fun to make.    Hope you like them!
