Holiday Party!

We had lots of yummy treats to share!

We had a wonderful first meeting of the Guild year. We got down to "business", discussing budget and bylaws. We also discussed programming and charity priorities for the coming year. It's going to be a fun one! Marie, our new President, got things rolling.

Improv: Beyond The Bee and Y-Seam Tute

Hi everyone, I've completed Jenny's scores for the May Improv: Beyond The Bee blocks and I've written this blog post sharing my process and thoughts.

On my own blog for reference, I also have this page detailing instructions for all 2012-2015 original Guild Bee blocks alongside Challenge blocks and Block Lotto, etc.

Back in March, after demoing Y-Seams at the Guild meeting I posted A Beginner's Guide To Y-Seams and shared it on the Guild's private Facebook page. I don't think everyone accesses the Facebook group so I'm taking the opportunity to mention it here too.

Over the summer I'll post a binding tute based on the demo I did at the May meeting, I'll let you know when it's available.

Can't wait for the retreat this weekend and wishing everyone a really great summer :D - Chris

Arrowhead Floral - April Block Lotto

Thanks Maggie for coming to the rescue and suggesting Anita's awesome arrrowhead block for April Block Lotto!

Click here for the instructions.

Size
The pattern is for 8.5 inch finished blocks.

Fabric
Please use one floral and one other fabric. The second fabric can be any contrasting fabric you'd like.

Block Lotto for February - Rectangles of love!

Nothing says love like right angles, so in honor of Valentine's Day we're making rectangles!

Make a rectangle finished size of 10” by 6”. Your rectangle must be made up solely of other rectangles. One of the rectangles in your block must be red. Please use only solids (almost solids/blenders are also acceptable), no prints.

Have fun. The more you make the better your chances of winning!

Block Lotto for December

We got some great ideas for Block Lotto at the brainstorming session! So stay tuned for some exciting challenges in 2016. For December, we've selected the converging corners block. Here's a photo of the one I made.

After much debate, we decided on solid white for the background and any combination of brights for the center and two corner. I think these will look really festive when they're all put together. The more you make, the better chance you have of winning. So forget holiday shopping, stay home and sew!

After seeking guidance from the gang on the Facebook page on whether to go with gold on a brown background or brown on a gold background, I went with the majority and finished this block this morning.

Block Lotto - November

November's block lotto is the Skinny churn dash. HoosierToni's pattern offers several variations so you can show off your stitching skills. You can pick any of the variations you'd like. Or better yet, don't pick. Make them all!

Whichever variation you make, we ask that you:

incorporate "made fabric" somewhere in the block
use "fall colors"

It was a really simple pattern, but I needed to trim the corner HSTs. Here are the samples Rachel and I made:

June Block Lotto

Our June Block Lotto will be an Amish Buggy Block

Very easy!

Cut two strips of contrasting fabric

3.5" X 29"

Sew the two strips together and press.

I like to press open the seams on this one,

but do it the way you like to do it.

Cut the sewn together strips into 3.5" sections.

You will need 8 two block sections.

Sew the sections into rows.

Sew the rows together.

TADA!

You now have a 12.5" Amish Buggy Block.

As always, each block you make gets a lottery ticket

to win all the blocks.

DECEMBER BLOCK LOTTO

Dear Mods,

We are all probably getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with family and friends, so our sewing time might be limited.

Just a reminder, though, of our next meeting's Block Lotto.We chose to make this time a 12.5" unfinished block, using low volume fabrics. The block design is up to each of us.

I wanted to play with half rectangle triangles so here is my block.

I think the lotto is a great opportunity to try out a new technique or design.
